Handcrafted Porcelain Balloons: Where Fine Art Meets Ceramic Mastery
From hand-molded porcelain to high-gloss perfection - discover the artistry behind Angie Cruickshank's signature ceramic balloons.
The process of creating a porcelain balloon is intricate and requires both artistic skill and technical expertise. It begins with selecting high-quality porcelain clay, which is carefully prepared and wedged to remove any air bubbles. Angie then hand-molds each balloon, shaping it to achieve a smooth and refined form that captures the delicate, weightless essence of a real balloon. Once shaped, the piece undergoes a meticulous drying process to prevent cracking before being fired in a kiln at 1,230°C, a temperature that vitrifies the porcelain, making it strong and durable.
After the initial firing, the surface is sanded and further refined to perfect the shape and texture. Next, the piece is sprayed with a 2K MS grey primer, which sets the surface and ensures an ideal foundation for the base color. The balloons can then be coated in a variety of finishes, including flat, pearl, shimmer, and glitter, allowing for a wide range of artistic expressions. Finally, a solid 2K double top coat in clear is applied. This two-component (2K) paint is preferred over one-component (1K) alternatives because it provides a more durable, hard-wearing, and chemically resistant finish, making the ceramic balloons long-lasting and visually striking.
This fusion of fine art and ceramic craftsmanship makes Angie’s porcelain balloons truly unique, blending elegance with a sense of playful nostalgia.
